![]() When unresolved issues from Tyler’s past complicate things even further, she discovers she may yet have some things to figure out before she can find her own happy ending. This delightful first book in the Tales Behind the Veils series chronicles Tyler’s wacky misadventures, both personal and professional. The romance was real and the ending was awesome. Just Listen, one of them, was to me a slow read. This book was different than the other two Sarah Dessen books I've read. The other day I finished the book What Happened To Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. ![]() ![]() ![]() The best Goosebumps book covers managed to be scary but also bold and vivid, making them eye-catching and suitable for their target readership. ![]() One of the things that helped make the series such a resounding success was the eye-catching book covers that accompanied every book. ![]() Stine is known around the world for the enduring popularity of his Goosebumps book series.ĭuring the heyday of classic Goosebumps, Stine was truly prolific, with a new Goosebumps book being released every month. The story’s protagonist, Gregor Samsa, has awoken one morning to find himself “transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin” (7). The novella opens with a most preposterous scenario, immediately testing, and seeking to expand, the reader’s ability to suspend disbelief. As this short essay will explore, the reader leaves the novel feeling unsettled and unsatisfied, imprinted-one might even say scarred-with the message that sometimes the world one lives in makes it impossible to ever express that identity and to have it understood. Kafka’s Metamorphosis is a magical realist, allegorical tale that touches on the theme most central to us all-that of struggling to find and express one’s own identity in a world of ever-present, all-consuming obligations. Ominously, the cover does not contain an image of Gregor Samsa in his transformed state-the nature of his new form is left entirely up to the reader. ![]() ![]() The original cover of Kafka's Metamorphosis, as the author intended it. ![]() ![]() ![]() A fourth, The Queen’s Gambit, was adapted into a mini-series with the same title and shown on Netflix in 2020. The Hustler is about the victories and losses of one “Fast” Eddie Felson, a poolroom hustler who travels from town to town conning strangers into thinking they could beat him at the game when in fact, he is a skillful player who has never lost a game. A world where humans wander, drugged and lulled by electronic bliss.
