In A Peculiar Indifference: The Neglected Toll of Violence on Black America (2020) Elliot Currie, a professor of criminology, law, and society at the University of California, Irvine, adds startling perspective: Since 2000, the overall homicide rate for black Americans has averaged seven times that of white Americans among men, the black-white disparity is more than nine to one. In 2020, black homicide increased 30 percent in the wake of unrest over the death of George Floyd during arrest by Minneapolis police, and police shootings of Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor. Contrary to media hysteria, interracial homicide is relatively rare-only about 14 percent of the total, and about 69 percent of that 14 percent is black-on-white. population yet suffered 49 percent of homicides, even after the much-noted urban crime drop of the 1990s. Black Americans make up only 14 percent of the U.S. Across all races, the United States saw 363,045 homicides over the same period. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 178,583 black Americans died by homicide from 2001 through 2020.

Now, if you actually watched the television series without reading the novels, this first book holds a few surprises. We love it, and so should you.ĭARKLY DREAMING DEXTER is wildly entertaining, and well worth the money of a purchase it is, however, different from the TV series. He kills the murderers, rapists, child molesters, and worse that escape punishment. Don’t worry, Dexter only kills the scum of Miami. In this first novel we are introduced to Dexter as he takes us on an introductory ride to one of his kills. His tries to take care of his sister (also in the Miami P.D.).ĭARKLY DREAMING DEXTER ( Amazon) is the first novel in an on-going series by Jeff Lindsay. It’s time everyone met Dexter, a blood-spatter specialist who works for the Miami Police Department. If you answered “no” to any of those questions, you have problems. Have you met Dexter Morgan? Surely you have watched the Showtime series based on his character, or even better, read the absurdly entertaining novels by Jeff Lindsay? The book is clearly very committed to the richness and authenticity of its setting, which includes a similar commitment to what might loosely be termed historically accurate attitudes. Its got a kind of inherent queerness, because of the nature of the cast, although I don’t know how I felt a lot of the time about how that queerness was realised, especially when it intersected with race. Which kind of works? And also doesn’t? Creating something that is full of atmosphere, (self-consciously?) low on coherence. The book is probably best described as a picaresque carousel (is that a totally mixed metaphor?), swirling from Italy to America, from year to year, and character to character. In any case our hero … protagonist? Is Raffi Peach, an Italian shipped off to American to essential hide him after a wayward priest, you know, mutilated him to preserve his voice. It was the setting of this one that caught my fancy, since I’m vaguely aware the Parker House Hotel was a real thing in Boston during the 1920s. Err, I read it because, having read exactly one history book about a single castrato, Amazon is now like SO YOU LIKE CASTRATO HUH HERE ARE NOTHING BUT BOOKS ABOUT CASTRATI. I genuinely don’t know what to make of this. The Devonshire House circle set trends in fashion, dance, and games of chance. She was the intermediary in many a brokered deal (e.g., the multiparty coalition that turned out Addington’s government in 1804). She was the first woman to publicly campaign for a candidate in an election, stumping for Fox in 1784. Although the mores of the time limited any woman’s political role, Georgiana wielded considerable influence with Charles James Fox, Charles Grey, and other Whig politicians of the day. The duchess made their London home, Devonshire House, the center of Whig politics and social life for the last quarter of the 18th century. What the taciturn duke lacked in political drive was more than made up for by his ambitious wife. Born in 1757, Georgiana Spencer married William Cavendish, fifth Duke of Devonshire, a leading Whig aristocrat who never sought nor held high public office. Journalist Foreman, whose work is based on her doctoral research at Oxford, has written a lively account of the life and times of Georgiana Cavendish that is also a social history of the British aristocracy in the late 1700s. An accomplished biography of one of the most important women of 18th- century Britain. A disappointing outcome for me, but not nearly as disappointing as the turnout: a miserable 28% of the electorate. I was with the candidate who expressed some concerns about both trends, and he lost to the candidate who served as our former mayor’s right-hand man, so I assume that both trends will continue unabated. The first new Mayor in 17 years: an exciting and momentous occasion, especially given all that’s happened over those years, particularly the intensification of both development and Haunted Happenings. Against the backdrop of finishing the semester, grading and graduation was Salem’s special mayoral election, as our previous Mayor ascended (?) to the office of Lieutenant Governor in last fall’s election. A whirlwind of a week! Or should I say a rollercoaster, from my personal perspective.
